Song of the Day #81: Muse- New Born
Honestly, it took me a while to appreciate what Muse does. Once I finally watched their performances and read a little bit about the band, I was in complete awe of the band. The reason why Muse is so amazing is because they combine a multitude of genre’s (classical, rock, heavy metal, and electronic music) to form this wonderful sound. On top of it, all the artists in the band are truly talented, each being able to play multiple instruments.
This is one of my favorite tracks by Muse. You can hear distinct similarities to Radiohead and Queen in their music. It’s beautiful! Unfortunately, Muse isnt very popular amongst Americans. I wonder why? Just take a look at the music we listen to in America.

I find that placing one genre on a particular group or artist is not a logical way of describing music because so much of music is made up of multiple genre’s. My dilemma came when I wanted to put Bennie and the Jets on the list…I wasnt sure if Elton John is considered rock…what do you think?
This is a rough list and obviously could be changed to each person’s preferences. What song do you think should be on this list? What song should not be on this list?
Really cool Mash-Up of Radiohead and Dave Brubeck. Its pretty strange that these two songs, both in 5/4 time signature actually work together.

Song of the Day #57: Radiohead- Karma Police
Probably, one of the greatest alternative rock songs ever made! The idea behind the song is an enforcement group for people who dont follow by the laws of karma. Thom Yorke explained that the song was is about stress and alludes to the dissatisfaction of capitalism.
The piano part is relatively simple in A Dorian with the second half of the song continuing in B minor. Listening to the song, it reminds me of a march with the drum beat, trudging along dragging heavy bags. I especially love it when the drums stop and we just have the vocals, the piano, guitar, and the haunting howls of a “choir” in the background. It really emphasizes the power of the Karma Police.
Radiohead is an amazing band that has influences from The Beatles, Miles Davis, Classical music, DJ Shadow, and other techno music artists. What’s so amazing is to be able to form concrete music from all of those completely different genre’s, to create a genre of their own.

Another Brad Mehldau cover.
Radiohead- Paranoid Android. I remember the first time i saw the video for this song by Radiohead. It really freaked me out and left me with permanent violent images in my head forever. I guess that is a way to get people to remember your song…
What do you think of Brad Mehldau’s interpretation of this?
