ELECTRIC SUNDAY #11: The Cat Empire- The Chariot
Most people that I’ve spoken to have never heard of this band. A friend of mine just showed me them and it amazes me that they’ve been around for 10 years. I think their sound is very original. Their sound is described as a fusion of Jazz, Ska, Funk, and Rock with Latin influences. Talk about mixing of genre’s, this band does it! If you like Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, G Love, and Dave Matthews Band, Mighty Mighty Bosstones you may like this band.
And I think they do it really well! I could just imagine being at one of their concerts and dancing my ass off because their music grooves HARD! The band is a six piece band from Austrailia that begun as a jazz band in 1999. In their more recent albums they play with a DJ. I recommend this band for anyone interested in groovy Ska music looking for a new kick.
Dont be impatient, the song takes 45 seconds to build up and get really crazy. Enjoy! What do you think of this band?

I love the sounds of latin percussion. Conga’s have such a living sound to them. I especially love that wooden Guiro.
Have a nice weekend everyone :)

Great post…I like this guys tumblr. Learn something new everyday. Santana is definitely a classic artist to be remembered. Black Magic woman is awesome!
“Se a Cabo” by Santana [1970]
Latin jazz had been a small but strong style of jazz back into the early 1940s. Mario Bauzá, a Cuban who had previously played in the orchestras of Chick Webb and Cab Calloway, made Machito and His Afro-Cubans stars, “discovered” Puerto Rican tibales player Tito Puente in New York, and introduced Dizzy Gillespie to Cuban conguero Chano Pozo.
Carlos Santana worked within that legacy, but he did so in 1967 San Francisco. Instead of trumpets and saxophones taking the lead over traditional Latin percussion, Santana used electric guitar and Hammond B3 organ. After live success at Woodstock in 1969, Santana (the band) released Abraxas, their second and most popular LP. In line with the wild experimentation of the times, the album featured Fleetwood Mac’s bluesy “Black Magic Woman” right next to the Tito Puente Latin jazz of “Oye Como Va” and Santana’s own guitar ballad “Samba Pa Ti.” Written by Santana percussionist José “Chepito” Areas, “Se a Cabo” was a short Latin percussion showcase.
While often considered mostly in the rock idiom, early Santana was jazz fusion at its best.

This is some of the most amazing piano playing you will ever see! Michel Camilo is definitely one of the top living pianist, and he does it LATIN style.
Song of the Day #29: Michel Camilo- Caribe (live performance)
You will definitely be seeing Michel Camilo’s videos again on this blog. With the speed of Art Tatum and the qualities of Chick Corea, Michel Camilo has garnered some of the highest praise. Do you understand what it takes to be able to play with such speed, accuracy, and style!?!?!?! This probably took him 30 years to get to this level of playing!
I love it when he starts going double time at 3:00 minutes. Check it out!

Song of the Day #23- Astor Piazzolla- Milonga del Angel
This is, in my opinion, one of the most passionate and intense songs i ever heard. It sounds like something you would hear in a movie… “a couple is torn apart, they dont see each other for years, and then one day, they meet once again for a tango to be remembered forever.” It’s absolutely beautiful. Nothing else to be said. There is piano in the song, but it isnt the most essential instrument in the piece. It is the Bandoneon.

Song of the Day #21: Consuelo Velazquez- Besame Mucho (1968)
This song was written by Consuelo Velazquez even before she was ever kissed! She was inspired by one of Enrique Granados Goyescas. This song is another song that will forever be remembered by the music community as a standard. And that way she plays it is Unbelievable!!!!! Funny, i dont think I have many female musicians on this tumblr. Consuelo Velazquez has some serious chops on the piano. She does these amazing dramatic gestures through the piano that make this recording so majestic. Enjoy!
Here are the original lyrics:
Bésame, bésame mucho,
Como si fuera esta noche la última vez.
Bésame, bésame mucho,
Que tengo miedo a perderte, perderte después.
Quiero tenerte muy cerca,
Mirarme en tus ojos, verte junto a mí.
Piensa que tal vez mañana
Yo ya estaré lejos, muy lejos de tí.
Bésame, bésame mucho,
Como si fuera esta noche la última vez.
Bésame, bésame mucho,
Que tengo miedo a perderte, perderte después.
Translation:
Kiss me, kiss me a lot,
As if tonight were the last time.
Kiss me, kiss me a lot,
I fear to lose you, to lose you afterward.
I want to have you very close,
See myself in your eyes, see you next to me.
Think that maybe tomorrow
I’ll be far, far away from you.
Kiss me, kiss me a lot,
As if tonight were the last time.
Kiss me, kiss me a lot,
I fear to lose you, to lose you afterward.
Como si fuera esta noche la última vez.
Bésame, bésame mucho,

#5 Song of the Day: Reuben Gonzales- Siboney
This is Reuben Gonzales. My brother introduced me to his CD a few years back. He is also the pianist in the CD: Buena Vista Social Club. He is of Cuban decent, which should ultimately mean that he makes Great music. This song in particular is very passionate and has a smooth dancing feeling. If you’re not into latin music, but like classical and Jazz, you will like this!
I will post some of his other works and collaborations.
What song do you like to dance to in your own privacy?
