Song of the Day #118 - Beethoven - Concerto #5 in E Flat Major (w/ Glenn Gould)
USE HEADPHONES FOR THIS PIECE….And, close your eyes.
Fast forward to :32 seconds to skip the dude in the beginning. I first heard this 1st movement last week on the radio. I blasted it and was blown away by the intro piano section. The things that are done on this piano by the amazing Glenn Gould is out of this world. In my mind, this is one of the most monumental pieces of classical music and I would LOVE to see this piece live.
Reading about this piece, I found out that this was Beethoven’s last Concerto, and what a way it is to end the life of one of the greatest classical composers.

Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.

So, for the Beethoven- Moonlight Sonata double feature I have chosen to lighten up the mood with a jazzed up version of the song. And although, some may be a bit offended, I find this flattering because I like it when people defy convention and go beyond the “normal”. This also shows you that jazz isn’t just a genre, its always a way of playing a song. Anything can be “jazzed up”.
In music nothing HAS to be a certain way. That’s why it’s so beautiful!

Song of the Day/Night #64: Beethoven- Moonlight Sonata (Piano Sonata No. 14 in C# minor)
Today’s song of the day (or should i say night) will be a double feature.
My friend called me up today to tell me that his mother died. I was a bit shaken by the news because I met his mother many times and she was a sweet woman. He is also a long time friend from high school. So I’ve been all tied up with visiting him at his house and making sure that he is doing well.
I decided to make this the song of the day the Moonlight Sonata for a few reasons:
1. The Moonlight Sonata is a piece of music that everyone should know. Even if you dont like classical music. It’s a piece that broke normal convention of the “sonata” in it’s time and one that really resonates in human existence. I’m sure this song has influenced hundreds of musicians after it. One can feel the emotion that’s been instilled between those notes because it comes from a real place. And it’s not just sadness. It’s a melancholy mixture of emotions (At least my experience).
2. The recent news of this death has suddenly made me think of this song. I dont know why. I’ve never experience a funeral and it’s hard to see people in pain without feeling their pain. This song reminds me a bit of the journey of life. We are born and then one day, we pass away. It’s a cycle that is inevitable and it’s everywhere and in everything.
3. This is another great song to fall asleep to…
Stay tuned for the double feature…

This can be done with almost every classical song out there. I think it’s very smart and fun. How about Scott Joplin- maple leaf rag with a hip-hop beat? I don’t know why we don’t see this being done more often. Or how about more pop music stealing from classical music? We don’t see that being done. We only see pop music repeating the same motifs and ideas.

I really enjoyed this transcription of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony! The classic classical piece that EVERYONE knows! If you dont know this composition, then you are a sad little human being.
Glenn Gould playing Liszt’s transcription of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Perhaps Beethoven has made a mistake…
