I find that placing one genre on a particular group or artist is not a logical way of describing music because so much of music is made up of multiple genre’s. My dilemma came when I wanted to put Bennie and the Jets on the list…I wasnt sure if Elton John is considered rock…what do you think?
This is a rough list and obviously could be changed to each person’s preferences. What song do you think should be on this list? What song should not be on this list?
Song of the day #69: Dave Grusin cover of Yesterday by The Beatles
Click play and imagine… What does this song make you think of when it starts? I see a new day, sun peaking through my windows, I see happiness, I see myself getting ready for work, eating breakfast. As the song progresses, I very much see reminiscence. The sighs of how much I missed it when I was young and didnt have to work…This song is very strong in it’s imagery and that’s why I posted it. Plus, the jazzy quality of the song and arrangement is well done.
I just found out about Dave Grusin who has an amazing discography. He is known for many movie scores including, The Graduate, as well as multiple Oscar nominations for many films. Check out his discography here.

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone that hated the Beatles.
#13 Song of the Day: The Beatles- Hey Jude
This is a classic song by the Beatles that will never be forgotten. It has to be on this list, there’s no excuses. The Beatles were pioneers of music and were one of the groups in the 60’s that took Blues and made it into Rock N’ Roll. Without them, we probably wouldn’t have half the rock music we have today. This song is particular is very simple in structure and chords. Anyone can learn how to play this track.

#11 Song of the Day: Spoon- The Way we Get By
I believe that Spoon is a direct outcome of the 60’s and 70’s rock. Although their band got together in the early 90’s, you can hear specific stylistic aspects that were taken from early rock bands. In this song they use the piano. You may find a trumpet or trombone in one of their other songs. Music must change over time and usually that change comes from the music before it. Spoon is a great example of how previous rock music has evolved into a new generation.
If you read more about them, you will find that the name, “Spoon” was chosen because of a hit song written by a 1970’s German avant-garde band named Can.
