Song of the Day #132- Turk Murphy’s Jazz Band- My Heart
I got into the old style- Dixieland Jazz when I was in New Orleans. This song has that same quality I heard on the streets of that beautiful city.

Song of the day #131: Bittersweet Symphony (covered by Brad Mehldau)
WOW. I love Brad Mehldau that much more because of this… Whats so amazing is that he makes the piano sound like a synthesizer. I like that Brad has transcended the idea of Jazz and brought it to younger generations. I got to meet and speak to Brad once at Birdland in New York CIty and the things he told me blew my mind. What an incredible man!
Song of the Day #130: Carl Czerny: Étude in D minor, Op. 740, no. 37.

Check out the left hand in this piece. Definitely a good one to learn if your right hand is stronger than your left (My case).

Song of the day #126- Chick Corea and Bobby McFerrin - Armando’s Rumba
Here are two amazingly talented performers that are so well developed with their craft that there is so much freedom in their work. I saw Bobby McFerrin live at Lincoln Center in New York City and it was one of the most inspirational performances of my life and career. You have to see him Live. He improvises EVERYTHING. The organization of his performances are even improvised. He just sings whatever he feels at that moment in time.
Chick Corea has distinguished himself as one of the prominent pioneers of modern jazz that is made today. He is most well known for Return to Forever in the 70’s. Together, these two performers fly with ease and such dynamics. Its impossible to watch this and not be amazed.

Song of the Day #124- Hiromi - Choux a la Creme
Hiromi is definitely my favorite modern jazz pianist. Her playing style is so free and exciting. Every time I watch her I am so amazed by her ease of playing and her abilities to astonish me every time. What’s also amazing is that her solos show a wide range of dynamics that its never tedious to listen to her. Sometimes solo’s can drag on for too long with too much of the same ideas. Hiromi is all about variety and dynamics.

Song of the Day #123 - La Campanella by Franz Liszt
La Campanella is translated as “the little bell” and it surely gives off that impression!
This is such an amazing piece to watch being played on the piano. Just look at the movements and subtleties of his hands as they glide over the keys. Its truly amazing throughout the entire piece. This is not some simple song in the key of C. This is a masterpiece written by a genius of which only those who have put their 10,000 hours of practice can play. Whats really impressive is that as the song progresses, the piece gets harder and harder!! Some of the jumps that are required in this piece by the right hand are 2 whole octaves. The left hand is even more difficult, with trills and jumps extending larger than 3 octaves! Read more here.

Song of the Day # 122: Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez- Invitation
When i first got this album, I listened to it everyday, about 10 times a day. I was obsessed! I mean listen to the Piano introduction that Bill Evans brings us in the first minute of this tune. It’s mind blowing how many parts Bill can do at the same time. Even the solo’s blow my mind. Its highly intellectual, HIGHLY advanced playing! Don’t just listen to the first 2 minutes, the song REALLY gets going at 3:58.
This album was at the later part of Bill Evans career. And it shows. You can hear a huge arc in the way Bill Evans has progressed over time from his albums in the 50’s. What I really love about this version of the song is that it really INVITES you to listen to the song. It’s very atmospheric! Cant you just picture a Grand Celebration and that Piano Intro luring you into the party?
What do you think of this piece?

Song of the Day #121 - David Sides - Cover of OneRepublic - Apologize
This is definitely one of David Sides’ most popular covers on youtube and I also think its one of his best. It’s a song that has topped the charts and broke records for the most radio airtime in one week and the most digital downloads ever!
I really love how David builds the song from beginning to end and I like the new melody that he added near the climax of the song. David Sides does a great job of making the song his own, without distorting the piece to the point of it being unrecognizable.
Do you like David Sides? Which cover do you like best?

Song of the Day #118 - Beethoven - Concerto #5 in E Flat Major (w/ Glenn Gould)
USE HEADPHONES FOR THIS PIECE….And, close your eyes.
Fast forward to :32 seconds to skip the dude in the beginning. I first heard this 1st movement last week on the radio. I blasted it and was blown away by the intro piano section. The things that are done on this piano by the amazing Glenn Gould is out of this world. In my mind, this is one of the most monumental pieces of classical music and I would LOVE to see this piece live.
Reading about this piece, I found out that this was Beethoven’s last Concerto, and what a way it is to end the life of one of the greatest classical composers.

Song of the Day #116 - Chick Corea & Hiromi Uehara - Spain
Amazing Dueling pianos between two masters. Both of these players have shown themselves as unique and innovative in the creation of music that delves deeper in thought than most genre’s. Although they make it seem easy, it has taken them many years (in the double digits) to get to this level of playing.
I’ve always love Chick Corea in his attempt at latin music. He has a very classical sound to his playing. Hiromi is a new player in my mind and she has really impressed me with some of her live recordings. Her sound is very young and has alot of soul to it. Check out this video of hers.
Spain is one of Chick Corea’s most well known composition. Enjoy!

Song of the Day # 115 Adele- Hometown Glory
I’ve heard of Adele before but never truly explored her music. Her voice reminds me very much like Amy Winehouse, but it’s still very different. Adele is much more innocent and less overbearing. Adele is a very creative musician and she recently has exploded onto the music scene with multiple Grammy’s. I like the rhythms she uses in her music. She really flows with the words and doesnt throw them in your face.
The piano in this piece reminds me a little bit of Philip Glass and Yann Tiersen. Its very minimalist and simple. It actually has a very similar sound to Comptine d’un autre été: l’après midi by Yann Tiersen. Interesting….hmm…
