Song of the Day #76: Ryuichi Sakamoto- Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence
A Portrait of Beauty through consecutive pitches of sound. This is a brilliant piece composed by the Academy Award Winning Japanese musician by the name of Ryuichi Sakamoto. This song comes from the soundtrack of the film with the same name. The way this piece starts off so innocent and dreamy reminds me of Debussy. Throughout this song you can hear the mixing of Japanese ideas and use of pentatonic scales with contemporary classical/jazz ideas. I’m really not sure what genre this song would go in. What do you think?
