Song of the Day #119 Wim Mertens - Struggle for Pleasure
Funny, when I recently listened to this song for the first time, I had this sudden feeling that I have heard it already. Maybe I have and didn’t even notice. This is definitely the most famous piece by Wim Mertens which probably paved the way for other artists today such as Yann Tiersen. I love the piano section which is very difficult to play. It’s really a grand piece that only grows exponentially every 32 beats and builds itself into a huge monument. What’s really crazy is how it continuously builds and ends in complete silence leaving you with the energy of the song in your mind.
This piece reminds me alot of Philip Glass, which is definitely one of his influences. Wim Merten has created over 50 albums since 1980. Much of his work has been out of the mainstream music world.

Probably one of the best version of “Chopsticks” out there.
(Although it’s more of a medley of popular classical and jazz pieces).

USE HEADPHONES FOR THIS PIECE….And, close your eyes.
Fast forward to :32 seconds to skip the dude in the beginning. I first heard this 1st movement last week on the radio. I blasted it and was blown away by the intro piano section. The things that are done on this piano by the amazing Glenn Gould is out of this world. In my mind, this is one of the most monumental pieces of classical music and I would LOVE to see this piece live.
Reading about this piece, I found out that this was Beethoven’s last Concerto, and what a way it is to end the life of one of the greatest classical composers.

yerdarlingdaily asked: Did you see this? http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/28/us/28piano.html?hp
Totally awesome picture! (Though it does pain me to see a perfectly good instrument burned)
Funny, my dad just showed me a video about that piano about an hour ago. I wonder how it sounds now…you can probably make some beautiful atonal music…
I thought this might interest you. This is “The Firebird”, a Sauter piano from my family’s store, Noble Art Pianos, and custom painted by the artists at TAOD. I’m absolutely in love with it.
thepiano: I love the asymmetrical design of this piano. I would love to see how it sounds and feels. Where is your store?

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

Song of the Day #117- Civil Twilight - Letters from the Sky
I heard this song on the radio the other day and thought it was a really well made song. The piano chord changes meshed with the lyrics really gives me the chills in the beginning.
This song really reminds me of Radiohead in some ways and Linkin Park in other ways. Their sound is very dark and they use that reverb effect in the background. The piano is used very well to create that solo, lonely person feeling. And when the rest of the band comes in the song is really riding strong.
Reading more about this band I find that they take a lot of influence from U2 with their impassioned vocals and unique alternative rock sound. Its interesting to see how rock has evolved from the 1950’s and how electronic “futuristic” sounds have been incorporated into the mix.

I saw Keith Jarrett solo at Carnegie Hall last week…
Keith Jarrett Solo at Carnegie Hall – January 16, 2011
I had the pleasure of seeing Keith Jarrett Solo last Sunday at Carnegie hall. I saw him 2 years before in Carngie Hall and it was an amazing experience. I described that experience like going to a rock concert with everyone yelling and screaming for him to play another encore.
This performance last week was a little bit different. Keith usually comes out during his performances and talks to the audience before he begins. I really like that he creates a dialogue with the audience.
The first half of last weeks performance seemed as if Keith was a little out of it. It seemed as if he wasn’t fully in the moment and he wasn’t playing at his best level. Although, there were pieces that I enjoyed. He only played for about 40 minutes in the first act, which was not like him, so I think he felt the same way.
The second half was really beautiful to listen to. By the third piece I was so amazed by some of the things he was doing. It was as if he was doing 3-4 parts at the same time. During the 4th piece, there was a lot of coughing. I mean, every 5-10 seconds someone had to throw in a cough and it kept taking me out of the moment. About 3 minutes in he just stopped. He paused for 5 seconds then said, “Where’s the coughing now?” Although, I was annoyed by the coughing as well, it sometimes seemed as if Keith was more interested in the recording that was being made during the performance.
These incidents have occurred multiple times in the past. Read more “idiosyncracies” here. Keith Jarrett is a very pretentious man. Based on his comments and the way he talks about himself, you can tell he thinks he is the best. And I do agree that he is one of the best musicians out there right now, but I don’t think that’s an excuse to be extremely pretentious and rude to others. When Keith Jarrett comes out, people applaud as if he were the president…its pretty amazing to watch, but I dont treat him as if he is a God.
thatonehelloworldguy asked: What are you playing lately?
Hey buddy. Nice to hear from you again. Right now, I’ve been so swarmed with other things (like saving money) that I havent devoted enough time to the piano. But I’m starting to change my priorities again so I can focus more on piano and a possible new more personal blog in the works…
Right now, I just picked up two new standards: Solar and Anthropology. I figured i need some bebop in my repetoire. I also have been doing alot of easy classical sight reading because i need the sight reading practice very badly.
How about you? What are you playing right now?
